Welcome to my Substack! I’m Candace M. Laughinghouse, Ph.D., a passionate advocate for environmental justice, racial equity, and gender equality. My work explores the interconnectedness of these vital issues, shedding light on how they impact our communities and the planet. With a background in theology and ethics, I delve into topics such as climate justice, animal rights, and the cultural significance of music as a tool for social change. I believe that understanding these intersections is crucial for creating a more just and harmonious world. Through my writing, I aim to inspire action, foster dialogue, and highlight the voices of those often marginalized in these discussions. Join me as we explore the rhythms of justice and the melodies of change, and together, let’s envision a brighter future for all.

Although I currently live in Raleigh, NC, my roots trace back to Oakland, CA. I pursued my undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, majoring in Political Science and minoring in African American Studies. With an interest in law, I applied to the joint JD/MDiv program at Emory University. I earned a Master of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology, along with a certificate in Black Church Studies. Not yet ready for a Ph.D., I joined the ThM program at Duke Divinity School. After completing that, and following a decade filled with personal and institutional challenges, I achieved a Ph.D. in theological ethics from Chicago Theological Seminary. Yes, it’s a lot of education, but I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything. These institutions quenched my thirst for knowledge, and thanks to many professors, I was affirmed in my calling to pursue the work my soul is meant to do. What does this mean for me? It means extending beyond the confines of academia to maintain a reciprocal relationship with the 'real world' around me. I actively engage with organizations that advocate for the rights of marginalized and minoritized communities.
